Pulhams to introduce Tap On, Tap Off Freeflow across its network

Pulhams passengers will soon enjoy quicker, easier journeys as the operator launches its new Freeflow tap on, tap off contactless payment system on Sunday 26th July.

Developed in partnership with Ticketer, and with hardware funded by Gloucestershire County Council, Freeflow allows passengers to tap on using the ticket machine and tap off using a dedicated reader when alighting. The system is compatible with contactless bank cards as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

The launch follows the successful rollout of Freeflow across sister companies Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel.

Freeflow automatically calculates the correct fare based on the distance travelled, removing the need for customers to pre‑select a ticket or worry about choosing the right fare. It also supports daily and weekly fare capping, ensuring passengers never pay more than the best available price.

Luke Marion, Managing Director of Pulhams, said: “This is another important step in our ongoing investment in modern ticketing technology.

“We continue to embrace technology and ensure our services are fully accessible. The introduction of Freeflow at Pulhams bolsters our vision to enhance the customer journey, with an eye on bringing in multi-ticketing functions at a later date.

“With Freeflow, passengers simply tap on and tap off, and the system calculates the best possible fare for their journey.

“It removes the need to carry the right money or choose the correct ticket, and it helps speed up boarding, so journeys are faster and more convenient.”

Councillor Roger Whyborn, cabinet member for sustainable transport at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “We want to make using the bus as simple and convenient as possible, and this new tap on, tap off system is a great example of how technology can improve the passenger experience.

“It speeds up boarding and helps ensure people always get the best value for their journey. We are pleased to have supported this investment with government funding through our Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), which will make bus travel easier and more attractive for residents and visitors across Gloucestershire.”

The introduction of Freeflow forms part of Pulhams’ wider programme to modernise its ticketing offer and will be available across most of the network. Freeflow will operate on all standard Pulhams services, with a small number of specialist routes continuing to use their existing ticketing arrangements. These include The Robin, Cirencester College services and Football Special services to the Kassam Stadium.
